The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
